Nature is such an important part of the Montessori experience! Maria Montessori believed that “when children come in contact with nature, they reveal their strength”. Within our classroom we try to bring nature to our students as much as possible.
Throughout the school year, our students take great pride in the Care of Plants work, ensuring that every plant is watered and properly cared for daily.
With the new spring season comes many more exciting opportunities to enjoy and explore nature. I have been looking forward to this time of the year, especially so I could introduce my students to growing their very on vegetables. There are so many benefits to bringing gardening to the classroom. It helps to develop attitudes to create a sustainable future, tying in with the Montessori Philosophy of developing an appreciation and respect for the Earth and all living things; that lasts into adulthood. Along with this, gardening improves life skills such as working in groups and self-understanding. There is no better way to attract children to vegetables and fruits, then having them grow their own.
Over the last couple of weeks in Casa B, we have been planting different vegetables with the children. We began with planting Radish seeds! The children were so amazed to see how quickly the radishes sprouted!

Along with the radishes, we have started to grow our very own bean plants! We all prepared the beans to sprout and are very excited to learn all about their life cycle! Once our beans sprout, we are going to plant them in individual pots and continue to monitor their growth.

This is just a glimpse of nature in the Montessori environment! Over the next few weeks we will be exploring nature in new beautiful ways, such as getting our first class pet and caring for the cocoons we will be receiving soon. I'll be blogging about both of these exciting new responsibilities soon!
